Patterns of Interaction Between Moderators and Learners during Synchronous Oral Discussions Online in Second Life
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes research with French university graduate student moderators in a Master’s program on using technology to teach French as a foreign language and advanced undergraduate students learning French at an American university. Students used Second Life and Moodle to carry out oral tasks synchronously. For fall 2011, the researchers designed five tasks (étapes) that paralleled the undergraduates’ course curriculum. Transcripts of two of the six groups of moderators and learners show that the unintended different styles of moderator behaviors influenced learner interactions with each other and with the moderators. The authors show that students were less able to engage with each other when faced with more rigid questioning behaviors by the moderators. ed ut ic e00 72 67 62 , v er si on 2 1 Ju l 2 01 3 Author manuscript, published in "Learner-Computer Interaction in Language Education: A Festschrift in Honor of Robert Fischer, Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO) (Ed.) Peer-Assessment and Student-Driven Negotiation of Meaning: Two Ingredients for Creating Social Presence in Online EFL Social Contexts
With the current availability of state-of-the-art technology, particularly the Internet, people have expanded their channels of communication. This has similarly led to many people utilizing technology to learn second/foreign languages. Nevertheless, many current computer-assisted language learning (CALL) programs still appear to be lacking in interactivity and what is termed social presence, w...

Research on learning and argumentation traditionally focuses on the (socio)cognitive dimensions and benefits of argumentative dialogue. The papers which are part of this symposium, however, present recent research on intra-personal, non-cognitive variables and how they affect or are affected by electronic collective argumentation. The data are obtained from both e-discussants as well as e-moder...
متن کاملEffects of Receiving Corrective Feedback through Online Chats and Class Discussions on Iranian EFL Learners' Writing Quality
Giving corrective feedback (CF) is an essential part of the teaching and learning process, and the way it should beneficially be done has been the focus of attention for numerous researchers especially when traditional ways of CF provision are not possible, particularly in rare situations such as outbreaks of diseases. This study investigated how different ways of giving feedback; namely, throu...
متن کاملA Comparative Content Analysis of Student Interaction in Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning Networks
Interaction plays an important role to the success of distance learning. As most distance learning environments utilize mainly asynchronous ComputerMediated Communication (CMC) systems, interaction research that focuses on synchronous CMC is largely ignored. This study scrutinize the patterns of learnerlearner interaction in a distance-learning environment. Student interactions in synchronous a...
